Carey developed severe influenza and pneumonia while on a tour with her husband. The couple were nearly ready to return home when Carey became ill. Her husband took her to hospital, where she spent a month in critical care before being cleared to fly home. During this time, Carey’s husband stayed in New Zealand to help care for her. Their travel insurance provider covered the cost of the additional accommodation, as well as organising and paying for the new flights and transfers once the couple was able to return home.
