Kate became sick after getting a blockage in her abdomen. The local doctor in the small Greek town that Kate was visiting referred her to the hospital. Unfortunately, medical facilities can be scarce in rural parts of Greece and patients may face long transfers to better-equipped hospitals. In this case, the nearest hospital was over an hour away. An ambulance slowly transferred Kate along poorly maintained roads, and when she finally arrived she quickly received surgery. Fortunately, Kate had emergency medical cover as part of her travel insurance and was reimbursed for her medical bills and the lengthy ambulance trip.
